What is modern quilting?

Innovation, design, and originality are at the heart of modern quilting. Some key characteristics of a ‘modern’ quilt (according to The Modern Quilt Guild) include:- Bold use of colour
- High contrast and graphic areas of colour
- Improvisational piecing (“improv”)
- Minimalism
- Maximalism
- Expansive negative space
- Modern traditionalism
Many elements and themes of ‘modern’ quilting have been present in quilts for centuries, but it wasn’t until the 2000s that ‘modern quilting’ was recognized as a distinct style and the modern quilt movement began to grow.
